Safety and security are an integral part of any project planning in the modern era, given the many potential hazards and risks that could disrupt operations, whether temporarily or permanently, and pose a danger to human lives and property.

Therefore, it is essential that there are appropriate security and safety measures put in place to ensure that any potential dangers – both natural and manmade – are kept away from vulnerable or valuable sites.

That is why we at Bolina have developed a comprehensive range of Security Booms to stop watercraft from getting too close to runways, aprons, ports, and other waterfront locations and events. Designed for permanent, year-round operations, these booms are made of rotationally moulded UV-stabilised polyethylene and marine-grade, closed cell solid polyurethane foam.

One of the key products in our Security Boom range is our Port Security Booms, which have been modified from our market-leading chain boom designs that have been in operation since 1998.

Our chain booms are designed to restrain vessels that are drifting, disabled or out of control, and keep them upstream from hazards such as weirs and sluices. With a few simple modifications, these proven boom barriers become equally effective for the protection of critical installations and vessels in a port security role.

For example, one modification is the installation of rotating steel spikes – also known as spurs – that have been designed to discourage boats from trying to get over the boom by jumping through a gap between floats.

Simplicity is a key construction feature for our Port Security Booms. As such, we have designed them with user-friendly assembly in mind, with simple, easy to follow instructions for installation teams. Furthermore, they are virtually unsinkable and have up to 80 tons break load, making them ideal for deployment in a variety of situations and circumstances.

All our Port Security Booms have been manufactured to Bolina Standards, meaning that all the components have been made to ISO 9001 standard, while the welding quality has been tested with certified break loads. In addition, all our floats have been formed with Lloyds Registered marine grade PU, guaranteeing quality and consistent performance to our clients.

Port security experience

Over the years, our Port Security Booms have been deployed on a variety of high profile projects, such as in 2012, when we successfully completed a contract to supply and install 300 metres of the system to the Ministry of Defence in Algeria; this followed a 2011 project, where we worked with DLB Holland to provide Port Security Exclusion Zone Booms for the US military during visits to European ports. We supply and have installed Port Security Booms across projects in the Middle East and Far East, providing a number of demarcations, border and anti-intrusion solutions.
